Getting Started
How It Works
Getting started takes less than a minute — no Chinese knowledge required for parents.
Step 1: Create a Profile
Set up a profile for your child with their name and age band, so lessons and difficulty adjust to fit them.
Step 2: Start With Sounds
Pinyin initials, finals, and the four tones come first, so a child hears Mandarin correctly before they ever try to read it.
Step 3: Trace Real Characters
Guided stroke-order tracing teaches each character the way it is actually written — correct sequence, correct direction.
Step 4: Watch Them Grow
Track streaks and topics mastered from the parent dashboard as their Mandarin builds day by day.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything parents ask before getting started.
What is Chinese for Kids: Learn & Play?
It's a bilingual early-learning app for children roughly ages 3 to 9. It teaches Mandarin words, pinyin, and Chinese character writing alongside Math, Science, Computers, General Knowledge, and English — all paired with English and native Mandarin audio.
Does it teach children to write Chinese characters?
Yes, and it's the app's standout feature. It includes stroke-order data for 785 Chinese characters, with a guided tracing board that shows the correct stroke sequence and direction for each one.
Does it teach pinyin?
Yes, in full and split the way pinyin is actually taught: 23 initials (声母), 15 finals (韵母), and all 4 tones (声调), each with native audio, plus a 26-letter Chinese alphabet set.
Is it Simplified or Traditional Chinese?
Simplified Chinese only. The app's interface and all character content use Simplified forms — there is no Traditional Chinese option today.
What ages is the app designed for?
Children roughly ages 3 to 9. During setup you pick an age band — 3–4 for first words and sounds, 5–6 for reading words, or 7 and up for short sentences — and lessons are paced to match.
Do I need to speak Chinese to help my child use it?
No. Every word and lesson pairs Chinese with clear English text and native Mandarin audio, so parents who don't speak Chinese can follow along just as easily as their child.
Does it teach about China itself?
Yes. General Knowledge includes a dedicated China track of 27 lessons — All About China (the flag, the writing system, the money, and the legend of the first characters), Cities & Landmarks from the palace to the Great Wall, and History & Heroes.
Is the app safe for kids?
Yes. There are no ads, ever, no third-party tracking, and no chat or social features of any kind — just a focused, private space to learn.
Is there a free version?
Yes. The app is free to download, and every subject includes a free set of topics your child can start with right away — the full Sounds library is free too. An optional subscription unlocks the remaining topics; current pricing is shown on the App Store and in the app before you buy.
Does the app work without an internet connection?
Yes. All lessons, audio, and artwork are bundled with the app, so everything works offline — handy for car rides, flights, or anywhere without reliable Wi-Fi.
