What is Chinese for Kids: Learn & Play?
It's a bilingual early-learning app for children roughly ages 3 to 9. It teaches Mandarin words, pinyin, and Chinese character writing alongside Math, Science, Computers, General Knowledge, and English, all paired with English translations and native Mandarin audio.
What ages is the app designed for?
Roughly ages 3 to 9. During setup you pick an age band — 3–4 for first words and sounds, 5–6 for reading words, or 7 and up for short sentences — and lessons are paced to match.
Do I need to speak Chinese to help my child use it?
No. Every word and lesson shows Chinese alongside English text and includes native Mandarin audio, so a parent with no Chinese background can follow along and support their child just as easily.
Is this suitable for a complete beginner?
Yes. The app starts with sounds — pinyin initials, finals, and tones — before any reading or writing, so a child with no exposure to Chinese has a way in. Character tracing comes later, once the sounds are familiar.
How do I get started?
Download the app, create a profile for your child with their name and age band, and pick a section to start with. No account setup or Chinese knowledge is required.
Can more than one child use the app?
Yes. You can create up to two child profiles, and each child's lessons, streaks, and progress are tracked separately.
How long is a typical session?
Short by design. During setup you choose a daily goal of 5, 10, or 15 minutes, and the parent dashboard tracks progress against that goal each week.

Does the app teach children to write Chinese characters?
Yes — this is its standout feature. The app includes stroke-order data for 785 Chinese characters and a guided tracing board that shows the correct stroke sequence and direction for each one, so children learn to write hanzi properly rather than just copying a shape.
Does it teach pinyin?
Yes, split the way pinyin is actually taught: 23 initials (声母), 15 finals (韵母), and all 4 tones (声调), each with native audio. There's also a 26-letter Chinese alphabet set that bridges the Latin alphabet to pinyin spelling.
Does it teach tones?
Yes. All four tones are taught as their own section with native audio, so children hear the difference rather than reading about it.
Is it Simplified or Traditional Chinese?
Simplified Chinese only. The app's interface and all character content use Simplified forms — there is no Traditional Chinese option today.
What subjects does the app teach?
Nine learning sections: Learn Words, the Chinese Alphabet Set, Pinyin Sounds, Writing, Sentences, Math, Science, Computers, General Knowledge, and English — plus Coloring, Drawing, Bedtime Stories, a Sounds library, and a Parent & Young matching activity.
How many words does the app cover?
95 words across 12 topics — animals, body parts, colors, family, feelings, fruits, manners, nature, numbers, occupations, vegetables, and vehicles. Every word has an illustration and native Mandarin audio.
Does it teach sentences, not just single words?
Yes. There are 40 sentences with build-the-sentence and meaning drills, which feed practice levels 6 through 8.
Does it teach about China?
Yes. General Knowledge includes a dedicated China track of 27 lessons: All About China (the flag, the writing system, the money, and the legend of the first characters), Cities & Landmarks from the palace to the Great Wall, and History & Heroes.
Does it teach Math and Science?
Yes. Math covers addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division across four topics of six steps each. Science has 45 lessons across five levels — weather and seasons, nature, the life cycle, food chains, and space.
What does the Computers subject cover?
53 lessons across five levels: how computers work, what's inside one, a "Stop, Think, Ask" online-safety unit, smart online habits, and an AI literacy unit on telling real from generated. It's digital literacy, not coding.
Does it teach English too, or only Chinese?
Both. Alongside the Mandarin-focused sections there's a dedicated English subject across four levels — letters A–I, J–R, S–Z, and first words — so practice runs in both directions.
Does the app record my child's voice or score their pronunciation?
No. The app plays native Mandarin audio for every word and tone so children can listen and repeat, but it does not record a child's voice or grade their pronunciation.

Is Chinese for Kids: Learn & Play free?
It's free to download, and every subject includes a free set of topics your child can use right away. An optional subscription unlocks the remaining topics; current pricing is shown on the App Store and in the app before you buy.
What's included for free?
A meaningful slice of every subject: a set of free word topics, addition and subtraction in Math, two Science levels, two Computers levels, two General Knowledge levels, half the bedtime stories, half the Parent & Young pairs, and the entire Sounds library.
If I subscribe and then stop, does my child lose what they finished?
No. Topics your child has already completed stay unlocked permanently — completed content is never re-locked.
Can I cancel my subscription?
Yes, at any time from your Apple ID account settings. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the current period ends.
Are there any other in-app purchases?
No. There are no coins, gems, loot boxes, or one-off content purchases — just the free tier and the subscription that unlocks the rest.

Is the app safe for kids?
Yes. There are no ads, no third-party tracking, and no chat or social features — the app is built as a focused, private space with children's safety in mind. It carries a 4+ age rating.
Does the app show ads?
No. Chinese for Kids: Learn & Play has no ads at all, free or paid.
Does the app track my child's data?
No third-party tracking is used. The app's privacy manifest declares no tracking and no tracking domains; the only data collected is anonymous usage data for analytics and app functionality, which is not linked to your child's identity and never used for advertising.
Are there chat or social features?
No. There is no chat, messaging, or social feed of any kind, and no way for another person to contact your child inside the app.
Is the app designed with children's privacy rules in mind?
Yes. The app is built around a COPPA-conscious approach to children's privacy — no ads, no third-party tracking, no social features, and personalized advertising is switched off entirely.
Why does the app ask for camera and photo access?
Only so a child can set a profile picture, and so a finished coloring page can be saved to your photo library. Both are optional — declining them doesn't affect any lesson.
Can my child change settings or make purchases on their own?
No. Parent settings, the dashboard, and purchase screens sit behind a parent gate that asks a simple math question a young child can't answer.

Is Chinese for Kids: Learn & Play available on Android?
Not currently. The app is available for iPhone and iPad on the Apple App Store only.
What iOS version does it need?
iOS 16.0 or later. It runs on both iPhone and iPad.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Every lesson, audio clip, and illustration is bundled inside the app, so it works with no internet connection at all once installed.
What languages is the app interface available in?
English and Simplified Chinese. The learning content itself is bilingual Chinese and English throughout.
Can parents track their child's progress?
Yes, through a parent dashboard showing daily streaks, a 7-day activity view, weekly play-time goals, words learned, and which topics have been completed.
Does it have a home screen widget?
Yes. An iOS home screen widget shows your child's current streak and progress at a glance.
Does it have screen-time limit controls?
Not currently. Parents can set weekly goals and see activity on the dashboard, but there isn't a hard daily time-limit lockout today.
Can I print character practice sheets?
Not currently. All writing practice happens on-screen with the guided tracing board — there's no printable-sheet export today.
