Privacy Policy for Neighborhood Explorer for Airbnb

Neighborhood Explorer for Airbnb (“the extension”) is a Chrome browser extension, published by ZingyBear Technologies LLP (“We”, “Us”, “Our”), that adds a neighborhood-information sidebar to Airbnb listing pages. This policy explains exactly what data the extension handles. It applies only to the extension; our website’s general Privacy Policy covers zingybear.com.

Summary

• The extension has no backend server, no accounts, and no analytics.
• It does not collect, store, sell, or share any personally identifiable information, browsing history, or user activity.
• The only data it transmits is the approximate geographic coordinates of the Airbnb listing you are currently viewing, sent to free public map services solely to look up nearby places and walking routes.
• No data is sent to ZingyBear or to any analytics, advertising, or tracking service.

What data the extension accesses

When you open an Airbnb listing page (/rooms/...), the extension reads the page’s already-rendered content to obtain:

• the listing’s approximate latitude and longitude,
• the listing title, neighborhood name, rating, and amenity list (used only for display in the sidebar, on your device).

This information is processed locally in your browser. The listing coordinates are the only item that leaves your device, as described below.

Data sent to third parties

To populate the sidebar, the extension sends the listing coordinates (and, for walking routes, the coordinates of nearby places) to these free, keyless services:

These requests contain only coordinates. They do not include your name, your Airbnb account, any identifier for you, or the listing URL. As with any web request, the receiving servers see your IP address and browser user-agent; the extension adds nothing to identify you.

The extension also shows links to Google Maps (a walking route from the listing to a place) and OpenStreetMap. These are ordinary links that open only when you click them; the extension does not contact those sites itself. Once you click, Google’s or OpenStreetMap’s own privacy policy applies.

Data stored on your device

The extension uses chrome.storage.local (local to your browser, never synced to us) to store:

• your sidebar preferences (theme, sort order, category filters, which categories are expanded, collapsed state, background color),
• a cache of nearby-places results, keyed by coordinates, that expires after 24 hours.

You can clear the cache at any time from the extension’s Settings page (“Clear cached nearby places”). Removing the extension deletes all of this data.

Permissions

• storage — to save the preferences and cache described above.
• Host access to overpass-api.de and routing.openstreetmap.de — to make the map requests described above.
• A content script on Airbnb websites (all country domains) — to read the listing page’s coordinates and display the sidebar. The extension requests no access to your data on Airbnb or any other website beyond reading the content of the listing page it runs on.

The extension does not execute remotely hosted code. All code is included in the extension package.

Data sale, use, and retention

We do not sell or transfer user data to third parties, other than the coordinate lookups described above, which are essential to the extension’s single purpose. We do not use or transfer data for purposes unrelated to the extension’s functionality, and we do not use or transfer data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes. We do not retain any user data, because we do not receive any.

Children

The extension is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone.

Any changes to this policy will be published on this page with an updated “Last updated” date.
